Main functions as a previous contractor for the US Department of Defense (DoD):
• Engineering Design
I have created network designs based on established architectural standards and best practices, made recommendations based on knowledge of both architectural and network engineering standards for MDACC, and consulted with services that Network Engineering can provide to customers looking for network-based solutions within the institution.
• Network Troubleshooting
I corrected problems and failures that occur on the MDACC network, worked with network operations to resolve these issues in a collaborative and constructive manner, utilized all available resources/tools/systems to work as efficiently and quickly as possible to reduce the mean time to repair for any given occurrence, and led the team in correcting network failures.
• Network Performance Configuration Monitoring and Analysis
It was my duty to know and understand the baseline performance of the network and closely monitor it so it operates according to its intended design. I also monitor the network's performance so that it meets the demands of all the applications and services it supports; analyzed performance anomalies, irregular stresses, and design deviations that affect proper network operation; and developed tutorials and best practices that can be passed on as knowledge transfer to network operations.
• Device Configuration Monitoring
I executed changes to network devices quickly, efficiently, and without incident; followed established guidelines for carrying out these changes; instructed peers / colleagues and directed the execution of the modifications to the network devices.
• Change Management and Communication
I followed the institutional process for change management as well as the additional communication requirements imposed within Network Services. I also communicated changes frequently, clearly, and in a timely manner so that all parties involved, directly or indirectly, are aware of the changes. Lastly, I help establish network engineering processes for getting changes vetted and approved for implementation.
• Operations and Support
I was involved in engineering of SA-related solutions for various project and operational needs. I also installed new servers or rebuild existing one, as well as configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage and others in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
I Installed and configured systems such as supports GIS infrastructure applications or Asset Management applications. I also developed and maintained installation and configuration procedures. It follows that I also helped maintain these systems’ standards.
I researched and recommended innovative solution, and automated approaches for system administration tasks where possible. I also helped identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.
Apart from these, I also performed daily system monitoring tasks to verify the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes. This involved reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups. Most importantly, I was assigned to regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
I also had to perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary. I needed to analyze these and perform regular file archival and purge as necessary.
My administrative duties involve managing user accounts, providing tier III/ other support per request from various constituencies, troubleshooting, hardware and software repair, and communication with impacted constituencies.
